Nintendo showcases ‘Super Mario’, Game Boy history in new museum

Next week, Japanese company Nintendo will unveil a museum dedicated to its history, allowing fans of “Super Mario,” “The Legend of Zelda,” and the Game Boy and Switch to explore the legacy of one of the world’s most famous game developers.

Situated in Uji, near Nintendo’s Kyoto headquarters, the museum highlights the company’s evolution from its founding in 1889 as a manufacturer of “hanafuda” playing cards to its current status as a global gaming powerhouse.

Super Mario creator’s statement

Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo’s executive fellow and creator of “Super Mario,” emphasized that the museum aims to enhance understanding of the company. He noted, “If our employees are rooted in values like family, fun, and simplicity, then the new Nintendo will continue to thrive.”

Opening to the public on October 2, the museum is located at the site of a former card factory and product repair center. Tickets for the next two months have already sold out on its website.

The museum features iconic devices such as the Wii console and handheld Game Boy, alongside lesser-known products like the “Mamaberica” baby stroller and “Copilas” printer. It also offers interactive experiences, allowing visitors to team up to play “Super Mario Bros.” on an oversized Family Computer controller.

While Nintendo’s foray into mobile gaming has slowed, its expansion efforts beyond gaming have gained momentum with the opening of retail stores and the use of its characters in theme parks and films.

The Switch console has been a major success, boasting an install base of over 140 million units. However, as sales begin to taper, investors are increasingly focused on the potential for a successor device, with Nintendo expected to share details before the end of the financial year in March.
